Brief description of type of therapy:

Expect to be treated with, compassion, respect, and commitment to high quality care in confidence with clear communication by a highly competent therapist. You can expect to have between 5 and 20 sessions of about sixty minutes per session over 6 weeks to 6 months depending on your need. The therapist will assess your suitability for CBT as it may not be the best option for everybody and it's important that your needs are met.
The therapist will ask you some questions about your background, although CBT focuses on current problems, it is useful to understand how things from the past may affect you now. You will set some goals for the short, medium and long term and set an agenda at the beginning of each session. Towards the end of each session agreed tasks will be set for you so that you can practice things that you learnt between the sessions.
The therapist will help you to identify, understand and change the unrealistic and unhelpful thoughts, and behaviours that you are having and also help you to prepare and prevent for relapses.
Cognitive Behavioural therapy can help you to control the distress and difficult symptoms that you are experiencing. It does not have any unpleasant side effects and could help you have more enjoyment in your life and feel better able to work and socialise effectively.
